South East Water Accelerated Learning Workshop

Case Study

Julia and Nikki designed a course to develop the in house training team at South East Water, who were newly formed with differing levels of experience and skills within the learning and development arena. After consideration of the team’s individual skills and attributes, we developed a workshop that would offer the team more variety of training methods and help with information retention for delegates.

Our Accelerated Learning Workshop was born.

BeSPOKE performance management delivered a 2 day workshop and rather than book a bland conference room, we chose a small cottage with plenty of wall space to be creative and relaxed.

Following the workshop the team continued practising the skills they had acquired by reviewing the courses they already had. They renamed some of their courses to make them more interesting and appealing. They decided to present their courses in a more graphical way and they committed to use less PowerPoint, in some cases none! They have even continued with their graphical presenting and have attended another 2 day graphic facilitation workshop to build on their skills.

Testimonial

Julia and Nikki organised an off-site workshop to explore accelerated training for my team to help us with our team charter to ‘challenge ourselves to create memorable and innovative learning experiences to deliver measurable results’. The aim was for the team to re-think delivery of training, think outside the box and come away with ideas to support the team charter.

The weekend was delivered in the style of accelerated learning and the activities chosen allowed the learning group to explore their creative talents and to generate lots of ideas. The principles of accelerated learning were explored and discussed through activities that suited the theorist, activist and pragmatist. Plenty time was given to reflect on our learning and building ourselves action plans to take back to the workplace.

This workshop suited my learning style and opened my thoughts to new ways of delivering training in a fun and interactive way. This training event was memorable and I don’t have any problem in recalling what I learnt as I have memories that enable me to recall the learning point. We were also provided with a photographic record of the work for reference and I have shamelessly robbed this idea for my training events.

After the workshop I immediately applied this learning to my work and designed and delivered a performance management programme for Team Leaders using accelerated learning and a suite of facilitated exercises. I no longer deliver in the ‘death by PowerPoint’ style and I find this style of training more enjoyable and rewarding. I have noticed that the groups I train are more involved and engaged and the positive feedback received from my evaluations support this.

Thank you Julia & Nikki for showing me the way!
